Disturbing and disgraceful to our country are the words that come to mind about how racist and xenophobic Americans are following President’s Trump lead in diminishing our reputation with outside countries who welcome us with open arms to their beautiful, tranquil, and friendly lands. This spring break my fiancé and I enjoyed our spring break in Cancun, Mexico, not only because of the tequila, gorgeous weather, and amazing beaches but because we enjoy the people of Mexico who have always treated us with gracious and inclusive hospitality. I have always enjoyed their culture, learning their customs, and learning their language as it is not only respectful but one of the best experiences travelers have while in Mexico. But after Donald Trump was elected Americans have grown hate towards Mexicans in banning them from entering our country while at the same time they welcome us into theirs. Not only has American resentment grown towards Mexicans because of President Trump’s hate speeches but their bold expression of it has been disgustingly portrayed this year as some Americans had the audacity to vacation on Mexico’s land while disrespecting their people by chanting “build the wall” earlier this month on a cruise ship in Cancun.
Here is a brief account of the incident that happened: Anaximandro and Sully Amable were all set to enjoy a night watching a pirate show on a boat in the waters off of Cancun two weeks ago. That’s when some U.S. tourists aboard the ship started chanting “build the wall,” in a reference to U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, Anaximandro wrote on Facebook in Spanish on March 6.
The chanting didn’t stop even after it clearly made Mexican workers and tourists aboard the ship uncomfortable, said a Friday editorial by The Yucatan Times, an English-language newspaper that covers the Yucatan Peninsula, where Cancun is located. Anaximandro, a Peruvian whose wife is Mexican, wrote that he has tried to stay out of the conversation around Trump’s wall, and that he wants to believe that stupidity only extends to a “small group of people.” But he said that this type of behaviour should not be tolerated and the Yucatan Times agreed with him.
“This is just one of the many blameworthy behaviours that young spring breakers have shown recently in Cancun and that are described as acts of xenophobia and discrimination within their own country, which is (or should be) totally unacceptable,” its editorial said.
The incident adds to a “growing number of complaints” from tourism workers who say that spring breakers have been “offensive, rude and haughty towards Mexican people.”
Anaximandro said that hearing Americans chant “build the wall” filled him with “rage” and “sadness.”
He implored Latin Americans not to tolerate these kinds of attitudes — not to make fun of people who are victimized by this rhetoric, or to partake in it.
It has only been 3 months into Trump’s presidency and the spike in offensive, hateful, and discriminatory behavior towards Mexicans in their own land by Americans are already rising. Considering the fact that Trump and his administration have posed bans on other countries from entering our land in fear of “terrorism” is hypocritical when our own citizens are terrorizing Mexicans when they allow us into their country without any restrictions. Perhaps Mexico may propose a travel ban on Americans in fear that we pose a threat to their citizens after the acts of hatred displayed by spring breakers in Cancun this month.
